{"id":1078,"date":"2010-03-08T22:08:02","date_gmt":"2010-03-09T02:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1078"},"modified":"2010-03-08T22:08:02","modified_gmt":"2010-03-09T02:08:02","slug":"summer-internship-at-solver-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2010\/03\/08\/summer-internship-at-solver-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Internship at Solver Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I get a fair number of emails of the sort &#8220;I am studying at &#8230;.and I would like to work under your supervision as a summer intern&#8221;.\u00a0 Most of the time they go on to say things like &#8220;I want to work under your supervision on stochastic optimization, supply chains, e-commerce&#8221; or an of a dozen things that suggest they 1) don&#8217;t know what I do, and 2) don&#8217;t really care to find out.\u00a0 That is probably the economically efficient choice, since I don&#8217;t take on summer interns, and have <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=114\">even written about it<\/a>.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know where this myth of summer internships for people from around the world comes from (unless there are a large group of people who welcome this?\u00a0 Let me know!).<\/p>\n<p>Once in a while, however, I see a summer internship and think:\u00a0 &#8220;Wow!\u00a0 I wish I was 20 (or 25) again!\u00a0 That looks like a great opportunity!&#8221;\u00a0 The Solver Foundation team just posted <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/natbr\/archive\/2010\/03\/08\/internship-opportunity-on-the-solver-foundation-team.aspx\">such an opportunity<\/a>.\u00a0 From the announcement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/solverfoundation.com\/about.aspx\">Solver Foundation<\/a> team is looking for an intern for this summmer! A short description is below \u2013 this is a software development position, where the focus is on practical application of numerical optimization techniques. I believe in a practical, challenging, and hopefully rewarding experience where interns work on real code that relates to their areas of interest.\u00a0If you&#8217;re interested, here&#8217;s what you should do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for the position\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/careers.microsoft.com\/careers\/EN\/US\/CollegeInternships.aspx \" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0Make sure you\u00a0apply under the \u201cSoftware and Hardware Development\u201d category.<\/li>\n<li>After you have applied, send a resume to natbr at microsoft dot com. We cannot guarantee a response to every inquiry due to volume.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A word of warning &#8211; this position is not for everyone.
