Lots of great things are being planned for the upcoming INFORMS Meeting<\/a>. Let me highlight two.<\/p>\n

First, there is a wonderful series of panel discussions planned (if I say so myself:\u00a0 I organized this particular track).\u00a0 The idea is to explore issues of professional interest (rather than technical tracks, which are interesting in their own right but not what we were aiming for here).\u00a0\u00a0 I previously asked for advice and feedback on topics<\/a>, and ended up finding some great panel organizers.\u00a0 Here is the list we ended up with<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I think there is nice variety in the topics.\u00a0 I am particularly looking forward to the session on social networks.\u00a0\u00a0 Laura McLay<\/a>, Aurelie Thiele<\/a>, Anna Nagurney<\/a>, and Wayne Winston<\/a> will discuss how twitter, facebook, blogs and so on can be used in the operations research world.\u00a0 Sounds like a great way to start of the conference.\u00a0 I’ll definitely be there live tweeting\/blogging.<\/p>\n

The second big activity I am looking forward to is “Forrest-Fest”.\u00a0 I am a big fan of COIN-OR<\/a>, the open source initiative in operations research (for a few more weeks, I sit on its Strategic Leadership Board).\u00a0 John Forrest<\/a> was one of the key people in the founding of COIN, and continues to play an extremely active role in code development and debugging.\u00a0 John is “retiring” from IBM;\u00a0 COIN-OR is turning 10 years old.\u00a0 The combination is obvious!\u00a0 It is time for a famous COIN-OR Party!\u00a0 You can check out their extensive set of talks at their wiki<\/a>.\u00a0 The COIN-OR reception is always enjoyable, and is promised to be “thoroughly optimized”.\u00a0 I do worry the shape of people Monday morning:\u00a0 robustness constraints are often ignored during the Sunday reception.<\/p>\n
