{"id":1297,"date":"2010-12-01T15:50:59","date_gmt":"2010-12-01T19:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1297"},"modified":"2010-12-01T15:50:59","modified_gmt":"2010-12-01T19:50:59","slug":"the-great-operations-research-blog-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2010\/12\/01\/the-great-operations-research-blog-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Operations Research Blog Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informs.org\">INFORMS<\/a> conference, a group of bloggORs (get it?) got together to discuss what sort of common activities we could do.\u00a0 While we all read each others work, and periodically repost each others work, for the most part we work alone.\u00a0 That is generally a good idea:\u00a0 we each have a style to our blog (I wouldn&#8217;t dare to talk about <a href=\"http:\/\/punkrockor.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/26\/on-vampires-and-stochastic-processes\/\">vampires<\/a>, for instance, leaving that to the expert).\u00a0 But we are a community.\u00a0 I point to all the OR blogs I can find and provide a feed of the latest posts in my sidebar;\u00a0 we sit on panels together; there is the odd off-blog conversation about blogging and OR issues.\u00a0 How can we strengthen that community?<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkingrandomly.com\/?p=2214\">Carnival of Mathematics <\/a>, the group decided it would be fun to have a monthly theme on which we could all write.\u00a0 All the resulting entries could then be collected at the end of the month.\u00a0 The INFORMS Blog was elected to be the coordinator of this activity, and has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informs.org\/About-INFORMS\/News-Room\/INFORMS-Blog\/December-Blog-Challenge-O.R.-and-the-Holidays\">just announced the first monthly Blog Challenge<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Topic for December 2010: <strong>O.R. and the Holidays<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Open to all bloggers!  All you have to do is a write a post on your site on that topic then send the pointer to <a title=\"mailto:graphics@mail.informs.org\" href=\"mailto:graphics@mail.informs.org\" target=\"_self\">graphics@mail.informs.org<\/a>.\u00a0 Given there are a couple dozen blogs in my &#8220;OR Blog Roll&#8221;, it would be great to get a big response to this.  No prizes, but, as the announcement says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What\u2019s in it for the bloggers? Widespread fame by being listed on the INFORMS home page.
