{"id":1549,"date":"2011-10-30T19:11:31","date_gmt":"2011-10-30T23:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1549"},"modified":"2011-10-30T19:11:31","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T23:11:31","slug":"can-the-new-york-times-magazine-please-hire-a-mathematically-literate-editor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/10\/30\/can-the-new-york-times-magazine-please-hire-a-mathematically-literate-editor\/","title":{"rendered":"Can the New York Times Magazine Please Hire a Mathematically Literate Editor?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/pages\/magazine\/index.html\">New York Times Magazine<\/a><\/em>\u00a0provides almost\u00a0inexhaustible\u00a0fodder for this blog. \u00a0Recently I have written about <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1535\">prostates<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1426\">cell phones<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1286\">ketogenic diets<\/a>, based on articles in the <em>Magazine<\/em>. \u00a0Normally the articles are well researched and provocative. \u00a0But sometimes things seem to go a bit haywire in the editing process, and the <em>Magazine<\/em>\u00a0lets through stuff that it really should catch (see, for instance, my post on <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=1439\">nonsensical graphics<\/a>). \u00a0This week in the midst of a fascinating (and scary)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/30\/magazine\/how-ready-are-we-for-bioterrorism.html?_r=1&amp;ref=magazine\"> article on the state of US\u00a0bio-defense<\/a>, there came the following sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In hundreds of experiments, scientist weaponized the bacteria to extraordinary potency and the proceeded to mix the slurry with another agent&#8230; which multiplied the effect logarithmically.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I suppose I should be happy that the <em>Magazine<\/em>\u00a0did not go with the lazy &#8220;exponentially&#8221;, but really: \u00a0what can it mean to multiply an effect &#8220;logarithmically&#8221;?
