{"id":219,"date":"2007-12-24T23:21:10","date_gmt":"2007-12-25T03:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=211"},"modified":"2007-12-24T23:21:10","modified_gmt":"2007-12-25T03:21:10","slug":"crack-cocaine-and-operations-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/12\/24\/crack-cocaine-and-operations-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Crack, Cocaine and Operations Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It might not be the most &#8220;Christmas-y&#8221; posting, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heinz.cmu.edu\/bio%5Cfaculty\/ab0q.html\">Al Blumstein<\/a> of Carnegie Mellon (whose work <a href=\"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=94\">I have discussed before<\/a>) is quoted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5hgK-3YZJf3uKy_HHHC1cLc4-rI2wD8TO03O00\">AP news coverage of the sentencing guidelines for crack versus powder cocaine<\/a>.\u00a0 In particular, he talks about the violence that crack created:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When crack first became popular, there was an increase in murders and other crimes associated with the drug.
