{"id":595,"date":"2009-03-02T20:55:36","date_gmt":"2009-03-03T00:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=595"},"modified":"2009-03-02T20:55:36","modified_gmt":"2009-03-03T00:55:36","slug":"kindle-and-math","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/03\/02\/kindle-and-math\/","title":{"rendered":"Kindle and Math"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Added January 6 2012.\u00a0 Note that this post refers to the kindle circa 2009.\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/math\/comments\/l0otb\/latex_mathematic_texts_on_kindle\/\">this discussion on reddit<\/a> for more recent (late 2011) information.\u00a0 Unfortunately I no longer use a Kindle so I cannot provide any updated information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Generation\/dp\/B00154JDAI\/ref=amb_link_83624371_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-1&amp;pf_rd_r=1GDY7W3RWR47QP5AXT7K&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=469942651&amp;pf_rd_i=507846\">new Kindle<\/a> from Amazon is out, and it is receiving a lot of press.\u00a0 Aurelie Thiele points out the<a href=\"http:\/\/engineered.typepad.com\/thoughts_on_business_engi\/2009\/03\/kindle-customers-willingness-to-pay.html\"> funny pricing of Amazon<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course, none of this is open in any sense of the word:\u00a0 Amazon wants to keep control here.\u00a0 I bought a Kindle for a trip I am on, and I really enjoy it so far, but I really bought it for research reasons: for reasons I&#8217;ll make clear in an upcoming post, I really need to travel with a large amount of technical material, so I thought this would be a good thing.\u00a0 But how to get math on the Kindle?\u00a0 My friend and sometime co-author <a href=\"http:\/\/stan.zin.googlepages.com\/\">Stan Zin<\/a> has been working on this and writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I converted a pdf file of a paper with lots of math into a<br \/>\nKindle-readable azw file (using @<a href=\"http:\/\/free.kindle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">free.kindle.com<\/a>). \u00a0It can&#8217;t handle the math very well, especially multi-line formulas. \u00a0Basically the math is completely garbled in translation. \u00a0I also tried to first convert pdf to a graphics file (eg, jpg, gif, png) then convert that to an azw file. \u00a0Now it&#8217;s unreadable because of scale. \u00a0The Kindle version doesn&#8217;t seem to be zoomable, and so is also unreadable. \u00a0Since Kindle&#8217;s azw format will handle Greek letters, as well as subscripts and superscripts, it would seem to have all the necessary components for generating complicated math. \u00a0But the conversion step from pdf doesn&#8217;t seem to be the way to go. \u00a0I was wondering if your OR blog readers might take this as a challenge. \u00a0How hard could it be for a hacker to create a LaTex2azw program? \u00a0I think there would be a big demand if it worked reasonably well.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What do you think?\u00a0 Is there a way to get math on the Kindle?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Added January 6 2012.\u00a0 Note that this post refers to the kindle circa 2009.\u00a0 See this discussion on reddit for more recent (late 2011) information.\u00a0 Unfortunately I no longer use a Kindle so I cannot provide any updated information.
