{"id":62,"date":"2006-04-20T08:25:00","date_gmt":"2006-04-20T12:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=49"},"modified":"2006-04-20T08:25:00","modified_gmt":"2006-04-20T12:25:00","slug":"ibms-center-for-business-optimization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2006\/04\/20\/ibms-center-for-business-optimization\/","title":{"rendered":"IBM\u2019s Center for Business Optimization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am in New York to give a talk to IBM&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www-1.ibm.com\/services\/us\/index.wss\/bus_serv\/bcs\/a1008891\">Center for Business Optimization<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/domino.watson.ibm.com\/comm\/pr.nsf\/pages\/bio.pulleyblank.html\">Bill Pulleyblank<\/a> is heading this activity.  Bill has had a really interesting career:  he started in academia, and did really fundamental work in combinatorial optimization.  He then moved to IBM, starting at Watson Research and moving on to doing things like heading the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.research.ibm.com\/bluegene\/\">Blue Gene Project,<\/a> which created the world&#8217;s fastest supercomputer.  CBO is a startup with IBM that tries to merge the assets of IBM (software packages, etc.) with the consulting skills of IBM Business Consultants (formerly PriceWaterhouseCooper&#8217;s consulting arm).<\/p>\n<p>It is exciting to see a company like IBM take optimization seriously.  The projects I have chatted with people about look like &#8220;real&#8221; optimization and business analytics:  data mining and modeling approaches to fraud dectection (both tax fraud and Medicare fraud), supply chain optimization, marketing design, and so on.  They have a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www-1.ibm.com\/services\/us\/index.wss\/bus_serv_cases\/bcs\/a1008891\">case studies<\/a> that outline their various projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am in New York to give a talk to IBM&#8217;s Center for Business Optimization.
