I am one of a stable of guest bloggers for the INFORMS Practice Meeting<\/a>. Rather than double post, I’ll move over to that blog<\/a> for a few days (unless I have something to say that isn’t appropriate for an INFORMS blog), with pointers from here.<\/p>\n

My first entry there: Tough Choices!<\/a>, where I complain about an embarrassment of riches.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m getting organized to head off to the INFORMS Practice Conference.\u00a0 I fly out Saturday, and will meet up with some friends to go to the Diamondbacks game.\u00a0 Sunday is shaping up to be a very full day.\u00a0 I really enjoy the Technology Workshops<\/a>, where software companies in operations research talk about their recent products and plans for the future.\u00a0 This year is shaping up to be particularly interesting due to all the activity in the market.\u00a0 Since last year\u2019s meeting,<\/p>\n

  1. Dash Optimization<\/a> (makers of Xpress-MP) has been bought by FairIsaac, which is now named FICO<\/li>\n
  2. ILOG<\/a> has been bought by IBM, and is now styled \u201cILOG, an IBM Company\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Gurobi<\/a> has been founded by some of the people who used to be with ILOG<\/li>\n
  4. Microsoft Solver Foundation<\/a> has started<\/li>\n
  5. Dynadec<\/a> has been formed to market Comet, a hybrid optimization, constraint programming, local search solver<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    and undoubtedly much more that I missed along the way, but will find out at the conference.\u00a0 All of these companies and many others and more will be presenting \u201chalf day\u201d workshops on Sunday:\u00a0 they are really three hour workshops so you can get in three of them during a very long day.\u00a0 The hard part is trying to figure out which three of the twelve workshops to attend!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
