{"id":672,"date":"2009-05-15T15:12:32","date_gmt":"2009-05-15T19:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=672"},"modified":"2009-05-15T15:12:32","modified_gmt":"2009-05-15T19:12:32","slug":"computational-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/05\/15\/computational-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Computational Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cornell.edu\/gomes\/\">Carla Gomes<\/a> from Cornell visited here a few weeks ago.\u00a0 I have known Carla for a decade or so, and she has been one of the people who I have found very useful to talk to when trying to figure out the world of constraint programming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cis.cornell.edu\/ics\/images\/ics-logo-small3.jpg\" alt=\"Institute for Computational Sustainability\" width=\"118\" height=\"78\" \/>Carla gets involved in <em>lots<\/em> of things.\u00a0 She (along with others, of course, though she is the Lead PI) received a huge grant from NSF to form an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computational-sustainability.org\/index.php\">Institute for Computational Sustainability<\/a>, which I think is a wonderful term for an interesting topic.\u00a0\u00a0 The vision statement for this activity is quite provocative:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Computer scientists can \u2014 and should \u2014 play a key role in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the way we manage and allocate our natural resources, while enriching and transforming Computer Science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, I consider Carla to be in Operations Research, even though she calls herself a computer scientist, and the topics that the Institute address have a strong operations research feel.  One example:  how can you most effectively create wildlife corridors to connect populations of endangered animals?  If that is not an OR problem, I don&#8217;t know what is!<\/p>\n<p>The Institute is holding its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computational-sustainability.org\/compsust09\/index.php\">first conference<\/a> in a few weeks, with registration open until May 22.  The conference has an extremely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computational-sustainability.org\/compsust09\/program.php\">broad group of speakers<\/a> and I suspect most of the conference will be spent trying to understand each others terminology, skills, and interests.
