{"id":710,"date":"2009-06-10T11:43:27","date_gmt":"2009-06-10T15:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=710"},"modified":"2009-06-10T11:43:27","modified_gmt":"2009-06-10T15:43:27","slug":"pittsburgh-hotbed-of-operations-research-and-baseball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/06\/10\/pittsburgh-hotbed-of-operations-research-and-baseball\/","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh: Hotbed of Operations Research and Baseball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"Ross Ohlendorf\" src=\"http:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/i\/headshots\/mlb\/players\/65\/28695.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"65\" height=\"90\" \/>Pittsburgh is becoming the center of the universe when it comes to combining baseball with operations research.\u00a0 First, there is &#8230; well, me! &#8230; a Professor of Operations Research whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-scheduling.com\">company<\/a> provides Major League Baseball with their player and umpire schedules.\u00a0 And, beginning last year, Pittsburgh has had Ross Ohlendorf, who has converted his Princeton degree in Operations Research and Financial Engineering into <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile?playerId=28695\">5 wins and a 4.82 ERA<\/a> (this year) as a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.<\/p>\n<p>Ross seems a serious OR guy.\u00a0 He did his undergraduate thesis on the financial return of players from the draft.\u00a0 Overall, his conclusion was that teams get a pretty good return from the money they put into top draft picks.\u00a0 ESPN has a <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/columns\/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&amp;id=4230662\">nice article on Ross&#8217;s OR side<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his thesis, Ross looked at drafts from 1989-1993.\u00a0 Some players offered tremendous return:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ohlendorf determined that the average signing bonus during those years was $210,236, and the average return was $2,468,127. Their best signing was <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile?playerId=2370\">Frank Thomas<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is nice to see that Ross&#8217;s intelligence does not come at the expense of collegiality:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ohlendorf is also a popular guy in the Pirates&#8217; clubhouse. &#8220;He is <em>so<\/em> smart,&#8221; said Pirates shortstop <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/profile?playerId=4627\">Jack Wilson<\/a>. &#8220;We give him a hard time about how smart he is, and he&#8217;ll come right back at us.
