{"id":819,"date":"2009-08-19T14:49:12","date_gmt":"2009-08-19T18:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/?p=819"},"modified":"2009-08-19T14:49:12","modified_gmt":"2009-08-19T18:49:12","slug":"competition-then-cooperation-more-on-the-netflix-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mat.tepper.cmu.edu\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/08\/19\/competition-then-cooperation-more-on-the-netflix-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition then Cooperation: More on the Netflix Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Wired<\/em> has a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/epicenter\/2009\/08\/netflix-prize-continues\/\"> nice article on the teams competing to win the Netflix Prize<\/a> (thanks for the pointer, Matt!).\u00a0 I think the most interesting aspect is how the &#8220;competition&#8221; turned into a cooperation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Teams Bellkor (AT&amp;T Research), Big Chaos and Pragmatic Theory combined to form Bellkor\u2019s Pragmatic Chaos, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/epicenter\/2009\/06\/winning-teams-join-to-qualify-for-1-million-netflix-prize\/\">first team to qualify<\/a> for the prize on June 26 with a 10.05 percent improvement over Netflix\u2019s existing algorithm. This triggered a 30-day window in which other teams were allowed to try to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>As if drawn together by unseen forces, over 30 competitors \u2014 including heavy hitters Grand Prize Team, Opera Solutions and Vandelay Industries, as well as competitors lower on the totem pole \u2014 banded together to form a new team called, fittingly, The Ensemble.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, with a bit more time, all those groups might have come together:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As much as these teams collapsed into each other during the contest\u2019s closing stages, they might have mated yet again to ensure that everyone on both qualifying teams would see some of the $1 million prize. Greg McAlpin of The Ensemble told Wired.com his team approached Bellkor\u2019s Pragmatic Chaos and asked to join forces (he later clarified that he was still part of Vandelay Industries at this point), but was spooked by AT&amp;T\u2019s lawyers.\u201cWe invited their whole team to join us. The first person to suggest it was my 11-year-old son,\u201d said McAlpin. \u201cI thought it sounded like a really good idea, so I e-mailed the guys from Bellkor\u2019s Pragmatic Chaos\u2026 [but] they said AT&amp;T\u2019s lawyers would require contracts with everyone to make agreements about who owns intellectual property\u2026 and it would take too long.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Data mining methods can easily be combined.\u00a0 A simple way is simply to have algorithms vote on the outcome.\u00a0 This can often result in much better answers than any individual technique.\u00a0 The Ensemble clearly did something like that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To combine competitors\u2019 algorithms, The Ensemble didn\u2019t have to cut and paste much code together.
