I was going to say Stephen does seem to go from highs to lows rather quickly sometimes, but upon reflection, I think the only times we see Stephen really high, that is to say, exuberant, is when he has found some new plant or animal or animal to study. When he and Jack are together as friends, he is content in theirrelationship. It has become necessary to him. When he is with Diana he is usually low; his highs, which appear to me to be moderates, always have a bit of an edge to them. ...

I agree Debbie, it truly is one of the best parts of The Canon. This passage really struck me as being quite a roller coaster ride for Stephen in such a short space of time and page (and not within the context of a battle): In Chapter 3 of The Commodore: S P O I L E R   S P A C E * Stephen arrives at Ashgrove and has a mildly uncomfortable discussion with Jack about Dianna and Brigid. This seems to be followed fairly quickly with an exchange of words in which Stephen figuratively towers over Mrs. Williams and ends with an very ag ...

Spoiler warning: Surgeon's Mate Speaking of listening to the series, and the effect of intimacy with the characters such a long series inculcates in me ...I just read the lovely, understated wedding scene of Stephen and Diana; and my reaction was *so* typical of me! I always cry at weddings, though I don't know why, since my marriage was an extremely happy one ...and I recognized and identified totally with Jack, thinking of Sophie, because when my husband and I were guests at a fr ...

145 Bridget (spoilers for The Commodore) -- rank: 669
I've been listening to The Patricks (O'Brian and Tull) just before bed and just before rising. My treat this morning was to wake up to Stephen discovering that Padeen had brought Bridget out of her autism. And I tell you, it's amazing what listening to such a long series of books does to a person. I feel as if these characters are family. I cried with happiness through the whole chapter, with breaks for cringing laughter at the tale of poor Clarissa, Sophie and the ill-fated crimson ...
