Did anyone other than myself think that Norton diminished, if not ruined, the cover artwork of the paperback edition of The Commodore by printing a banner at the bottom proclaiming it as a 'National Bestseller'? What say you, Patricia Chui? Dave Cooke 40* 44' N 74* 21' W

292 Re: Reading O'Brian (The Commodore) -- rank: 669
To Khope's excellent gloss on the first four paras of 'The Commodore,' I'd like to add this thought: The paragraphs constructed from a single long sentence also help engender the feeling of a long voyage now coming to an end. The rhythm of these sentences, punctuated with their commas, replicates the rhythm of a ship riding over the waves. Or so I'd imagine, having never sailed myself. Francis Gasparini 40* 43' N 74* 1' W

About Bob Fleisher's remarks etc. referring to Katherine Powers' comment (I have not seen the actual review he quotes) that the last several volumes of the oeuvre are not quite up to snuff (I of course paraphrase shamelessly): I don't think I agree- without the last few installments (say, from Thirteen Gun Salute or Nutmeg of Consolation on) we would have missed out on: Stephen's idyllic interlude in the earthly paradise at the top of the 'Thousand Steps', Jack and Stephen's tension over the re ...
