Everyone has already responded with their good takes on this and I can only agree. Many of your questions were touched upon when we did the first Group Read which John Finneran has posted on his site: O'Pinions & O'Bservations O' O'Bscure O'Briania http://jfinnera.www1.50megs.com/pob.html He also listed all of POB's works, with his own comments as well as other Lissuns'. Not to fend you off at all, Paul, as it's always good to revisit these questions but I'd been hoping that the ...

Pullings was Jack's flag captain when Jack was a commodore in TC, but when Jack reverted to just being a post captain, there was no long spot for Pullings.  I suppose ...

I've posted on this topic before, and while many esteemed lissuns do not agree with me, I feel that starting even with "Wine-Dark Sea" POB was writing with less energy and relish. There seems to be a certain tiredness, a certain perfunctory quality in his writing, as though he doesn't quite have the energy to fully develop his themes and conversations. Paul wrote...........<I apologize ahead of time that my thoughts are not as well formed as many who post on this list; I'm only on my second reading of the canon> You'd be amazed how often a new perspective on the books, a new reader, notices things that we haven't seen before, so your post is doubly valued, and I've been wondering the same about Martin, perhaps P o'B just couldn't find any more use for him, or indeed couldn't fit yet another fully developed character into the ...
