Well said, Stuart. Much to enjoy, but not the same. It echos life in a way, doesn't it?

Opinions will be appreciated. There are a few places on the internet where you can get the word-counts of some favorite books. Here are four examples of great novels: War and Peace 587 thousand words Moby Dick 206 thousand words Pride and Prejudice 120 thousand words Red B ...

"I seem to recall that for the later books his targeted word count was somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 words." The last 3 were in that range. "Somebody at Random House told me that the average novel was around 70,000 words." Possibly they meant the *average* novel... not the average *POB* novel. The average length of the series (20 books exc. no. 21) is 114,000 words, The longest (no.2) 168,000, The shortest (no.20) 87,000. The average of the first ten is 127,00 ...

Fascinating, Terry. Thanks. Somebody at Random House told me that the average novel was around 70,000 words. And I believe the average reader (surely Lissuns are way above average) reads at about 250 words a minute, which is (I think) about twice as fast as we speak. I just checked the ...

A few years ago I spent three days at the Lilly Library with O'Brian's papers. I eventually obtained copies of all of the material except for the manuscripts of the novels--the copying costs were a bit prohibitive. Don's message sent me upstairs to pull down the box of all this material--I still haven't gone through it all in great detail. The notes for the Commodore are interesting. The earliest date is December 11, 1992 (written as 11 xii 92). The page is headed "General tho ...

I had forgotten that scene completely, but I've read the book only once so far. I was surprised to see how close the Irish numbers are to the Latin ones (or Latin-derived ones as in Italian or Catalan). Why, the words are practically the same!
