Medicine is always moving forward. When my father had the accident that blinded him in 1965 he was told that a few months earlier they wouldn't have been able to save his eyes at all. Who knows, but now they would probably be able to have saved his sight. Still paranoid about those little balls of jelly that sit inside our skulls. :-) Stephen Chambers 50° 48' 38" N 01° 09' 15" W Approx. 180 inches above sea level When the pin is pulled Mr Grenade is no longer our friend. - ...

It seems to me that in the later books POB was in a way scraping the bottom of the barrel, and using odds and ends of jokes, natural history, anecdotes, folklore and the like to fill out the story. Episodes seem like lumps in gravy, just there, rather than being used to illustrate a character or emphasize the authentic flavor of the tale. Gerry Strey Madison, Wisconsin

Because I was paddling with the paddle. To use it as a rudder would have reduced the power by 10%

I did pick up "Germs, Guns and Steel" and it is a good book, although basically a reworking of "Ecological Imperialism" by Crosby (if I remember rightly). My memory my be failing, but wasn't it Diamond who came up with the "horizontal continent" theory? -----Original Message----- From: The Patrick O'Brian List of the World! I didn't say the book was true: I said the blurbs are: It is in fact brilliantly written, passionate, etc. And at least he's got some ideas to agree or disagree with, which is part of what makes it fun to read. For example, I seem to recall he says the natives he met in New Guinea are more intelligent than the civilized people he knows back home. Never having been to Papua, I'm not in a position to judge, but I certainly enjoyed reading about the experiences that led him to that conc ...
