181 Re: The Yellow Admiral -- rank: 873
Good insight, Susan. Thinking about the life they led in those days just wears me out, and I know that life spans were much shorter then. I read somewhere a long time ago that many achievers do their most brilliant work by the time they are 30. Well, that leaves me out! (Of course, it didn't pertain to POB.) Hor hor, or perhaps, hoar hoar.... Linnea   Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 08:38:30 -0800 From: Susan Wenger <susanwenger@YAHOO.COM> Subject: The Yellow Admiral Gerry Strey wrote: ...

Sadly, I have to agree with John's points. Starting as ealy as TWDS, I began to notice a flagging of energy and invention, of wit and zest in POBs writing. I've asked my self if THD or TYA had been the first POB book I encountered I would have been interested enough to have gone on to the rest of the series. Didn't POB suffer from writer's block while working on TWDS, and wasn't he helped out by former list member Ken Ringle who was rewarded by having the Baltimore clipper "Ringle ...

Did anyone else get the feeling that this book is different than earlier ones- more set(posed) and explanatory? It opens with Sir Joseph doing a recap and entre'acte precis to the Ministry bloke.Needham, setting the stage for the book. It also sets dates of events, usually bypassed in earlier books. Now you can set up a chronology and calculate Jack's age for each book. Later, Jack goes into detail on 'yellowing' to Sophie. I don't think he ever explained anything to her , at least ...

I have a large publicity picture of the Yellow Admiral book cover. The Bellona is heaved (hove) to. Anyway the main mast sails are backed, so that the ship is basically stopped in the water. Originally when the book was first published, there was some discussion about the angle the ship is at and while lowering the boat, if at that angle, she might have been banging down the side scraping the paintwork. I think that the ship was rolling a bit and so if timed correctly they would have got h ...
