226 The Yellow Admiral a Bargain! -- rank: 873
At lunch today I picked up a hard bound copy of _The Yellow Admiral_ for a mere $4.86 at B. Dalton's. (Apparently, the bargain price is due to an oversupply by Norton.) As I've been buying the Norton softbacks, have noticed that they are now priced one dollar more than before POB's death. 227 The Yellow Admirable -- rank: 873
At risk of being keelhauled, I am with child to share the results of surfing in search of definitive information about chufa/horchata: Alta Vista, the little search engine that can, turns up 2221 web pages related to Cyperus esculentus, or earthalmond, or Knolcyperus (Dutch) or Ermandelgras (German) or chufa (Spanish), or souchet comestible (French) or, especially in North America, chufa flatsedge or yellow nutsedge, a 'persistent perennial'. The majority opinion i ...

I've enjoyed the speculative thread with respect to how POB might bring the series 'full circle', and I'd love to hear more lissuns weigh in on the subject. 'Tis fruitless, true, but the dear knows how long we'll be lying at anchor while POB finishes #19, and it does give us a chance to run the guns in and out and keep the crew sharp until we're back in action. I, for one, (and I know this makes me a cad) hope that Jack will get a chance to finish his interrupted extra-marital rendezvous with ...

Dear list members, Please forgive me if this has been discussed, but I just joined the list. I am wondering if anybody knows anything about whether or when a sequel to the Yellow Admiral will appear. 234 minor characters, SPOILER for The Yellow Admiral -- rank: 873
Some months ago there was a discussion of the character midshipman Geogehegan, and several of us asserted that his death seemed wrong to them; having finally gotten my paperback YA, I have just read that part; my feelings for this episode fit in with Dr. Greenberg's posting about the minor characters we are given sufficient information about to start us feeling affectionate toward, and then they disappear, never to be seen again; the lovely boy dies, just after he has contributed mightily to ...

235 The Yellow Admiral Revisited, Again -- rank: 873
A recurring thread in the Gunroom is the quality, or perhaps lack thereof, of The Yellow Admiral, the latest volume in the canon. I have now read the book three times. The first time I was suffering a bad cold, so when I finished I wasn't sure I remembered half of it, but I thought that maybe it was not up to the earlier volumes. So, I went back and read it again and came away more satisfied. There were scenes in it which I cherished (e.g., the wonderful walk across Simmon's Lea and Diana's ...

236 Fwd: The Yellow Admiral - bestseller. -- rank: 873
--------------------- Forwarded message: Subj: The Yellow Admiral - bestseller. Date: 97-01-25 13:09:34 EST From: NELLWAD To: patrickobrian@norton2.wwnorton.com The recent, ahem, discussions on the merits of being a bestseller (Kent) as opposed to 'The best author you've never heard of' (O'Brian) remind me that this afternoon at Dillon's bookstore in Oxford Street I saw that The Yellow Admiral is at no. 3 in their list of top ten hard-back sales. If O'Brian continues to grow in p ...

>Is 'Ello, 'Ello really available in the US? I would appreciate a source >for video tapes.< 'Allo! 'Allo!' (if that's what is being referred to) is most definitely available in the US. In the New York area a _second_ series is playing as we speak. I may be the only person alive who has all (is it 50?) episodes of the first series on tape - unfortunately, carelessly spread over so many videos, and in such a helter-skelter fashion that it would take a lifetime to get them in any u ...
