"My grandfather, the General, married again after Jack's mother died: she wascalled Stanhope . . . " (Philip Aubrey in 'The Yellow Admiral', quoted by G. John Marmet) Apart from the odd problem of POB's having apparently forgotten that Jack and Philip technically belonged to the same generation rather than two successive ones, this passage adds one tiny stroke to the very shadowy image of Jack's mother; at least we now know her maiden name. (There is, of course, a Mr. Stan ...

The comma sellers probably wanted to make sure they off-loaded all their "l's" before Christmas.

Which I believe it is Philip. Neither the general nor I (I have a son Philip as well) could, in our strained circumstances at the birth of our sons Philip, afford the second "L". I see remember Jack, pre-YA, telling Phillip about his half-nephews and nieces, who were older than he was! But I also recall even earlier, the General, Jack's father, visiting Jack and Sophie early in their marriage and bringing along his dairymaid wife and their young son. More than one nod or editorial slip, I suspect. POB's Collins editors (of whom there were only ever, I think, three or four at the most, over time) seldom did any MS corrections at all, POB not caring for them..... So I suspect that either POB nodded in his original, or perhaps Mrs POB nodded in her typing of the MS.... Such nods were not particularly uncommon, and certainly increased in the final few books of the series. I find the nods more diverting than annoying - and I hope my Muster Book caught them all! (A high hope, but let ...

Sounds like an editor nodded, to me. And the episode reminds me of a joke told in Central America, but I won't repeat it here. Actually a whole series of jokes. Thanks for the nostalgia trip....back to my days of spending time with people who could sit at a party and tell jokes for two hours straight without running out of jokes. I quote a passage from the Yellow Admiral (that I have just completed): Philip andStephen could not speak freely until the boat reached the aviso, but therePhilip commanded a private, roughly triangular space with just room for two,and here, while they regaled on fresh bread and cheese, Philip said, 'I do notlike to sound holier than thou nor to speak disrespectfully of my elders, but Imust say that poor Jack's mother-in-law does come it pretty high. George - heis my nephew, you know, though I ...

SPOILING AGAIN...FOR THE SAKE OF SANity! How on earth did they manage a card game over the squawking of those penguins? "Tek-eli-li! Tek-eli-li!" And the crew being driven mad by those towering mountains and the eldritch whistling, let alone the sight of the shoggoths?
