It is noticeable that the only time Jack really gets the better of Killick is when he falls in the sea while trying to board via the stern in 'Clarissa Oakes'. Jack and Stephen both gloat for a while over how they have the better of him. It doesn't last, of course. To me Killick the the third character of the Canon. Did Hornblower have a mad, drunken, irreverent, incompetent, competent steward? No. Killick is wonderful. On 23/03/06, Don Seltzer <timoneer@gmail.com> wrote: & ...

112 Last looks at Killick: BATM spoiler -- rank: 633
We've looked at Killick in the first books of the canon; now let's watch his last scenes in Chapter Ten, the final chapter of Blue at the Mizzen. Here are three three last looks at Killick: [Here's what happens when POB tells us that Killick snoops to find out what Jack is going to do. It's not the only place in the canon where this happens, but it seems to me that POB here is "telling" us more than he's "showing" us -- an unusual approach for him.] Most shi ...

When I started`reading "The Wine Dark Sea" I began wondering who Clarissa Oakes was. Somehow I had managed to miss the publication of the book.
