And have you noticed that she says about the path out of the swamp: 'To tea, then; and at least we have a Christian path to the house. Coming down it again, we should be wise to carry a gun.' **********Thankee again, Charlzzzzz. As to the preceding 'bit' you mention, returning to the book I note I've underlined the word Christian as a 'tempting' word to run with in the context...but with O'Brian's use of the word , it's hard to quite know what he's up to at any given time! Hello from the binnacle light in Grimsby, ON As I await the clearing of the present hard rains before heading out, I briefly explored the archives of Open Sea and found some maunderings on BatM. The post needs work! I have done a minor bit of editing as suggested by the brackets. It's all rather tentative, but offers--if a patient body can read very closely and can follow the somewhat tortuous 'logic'--my sense that the mangrove scene suggests a pre-Eden, but that either way, the book deals t ...

Charlzzzzz, I'm saving this gem for a future good read. Right now, am having to submerge again, but hope to be back in the barky in a couple of weeks, with occasional peeks over the next few days as joyful respite from other matters. Sir, your year-long shore leave simply must not repeat itself. Admiralty orders. No yellow for you, Sir. Oh fiddle. Let's just say, with deepest respect to the rest of this prime crew, that your presence here is soooo important to all of us. Patricia To be r ...

56 Christine, and those two mysterious birds. BATM spoiler -- rank: 633
I propose that POB was echoing Milton when he placed Stephen and Christine in that swamp, which I take to be a vision of Eden after the fall. You'll notice that POB has placed two special birds in Eden, among innumerable lesser birds: a Bird of Sunrise and a Bird of Night. I had long wondered why POB makes so much of two birds. I even thought that he might have written his bird-scene in two different approaches, and then liked them both so much that he kept them both. But that ...

What ghastly things you tell me, Rowen, Adam and all. I try to avoid looking at the local weather but I do commiserate with all of you. I get pretty cross because the Weather Channel rarely if ever shows us what's happening just to our north in Canada or in Mexico or anywhere...I know they have little spots of world weather now and then and by the time I get my eyes focused, they're on to a commercial. Hm, it got all the way down to 56 degrees F., here, with a lovely blue, cloud-studdded sky. My squeaker and I went to see Spiderweb Chronicles.
