466 [lissun-bag] What the BATM sequel could have included -- rank: 633
Here's something POB might have used, if he could have bothered with reading current news: http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/041100sci-environ-iceberg.html I can just picture the scene .... Shouts above deck pierce through Stephen's sleep but it's the shaking that finally rouses him. "Jesus, Mary and Joseph," he cries, his eyes finally focusing on the round-faced midshipman. "Clover, am I to die shaken, not stirred?" "Oh, sir," says the boy ...

467 That squadron for South Africa: BATM spoiler -- rank: 633
Spoiler follows: At the end of BATM, Jack is ordered to pick up a squadron and head for South Africa. We might guess what POB planned for him if we found out what the RN actually did in South Africa after Cochrane finished in Chile. Anybody know? (Did Cochrane meet Sally Mputa, I wonder?)     Charlezzzz

From: "William Peschel" > I hold some understanding for what he was going through at the end, but he > did bring distress to his friends with his last few novels. I haven't gotten round to rereading BATM, partly because I was given 2 earlier ones, and I have been enjoying them slowly. I thought THD was good, without lots of sub themes (Naseby, the fall of Killick, women on board) that made a complex and delicious stew. My initial impression of BATM was that it was more one ...

I'm betwixt and between on the subject of I'm betwixt and between on the subject of B@M. I've read it twice and, while there are many enjoyable passages, I find it a very poor book indeed, considered overall. I feel much the same way about Hundred Days. But, but, but .... I've felt the same way about installments of the canon in the past (especially, say, Wine Dark Sea), but they all succeeded in growing on me, or I in growing into them. I'm convinced that POBs need to 'mature between ...

Probably as many of us did, I set out to read through the canon again after himself died. Last night I finished BATM. The sense of loss was overwhelming --- there will be no more. However, BATM turns out to be an almost perfect "last" volume. It is reflective, solemn in its pace, and has, despite the ending, a "dying fall" to it. I did not feel this when it first came out --- like some, it seemed to me to be a lesser effort, curiously incomplete. Now, of course, with t ...
