514 sub species wasRe: Final Thoughts Today -- and a BATM Spoiler -- rank: 633
going back over the last two novels I do believe that these were written with a poignant consciousness of his own mortality and specially informed by the feeling of writing 'sub species aeternitatis" i do not say that the intimation of mortality was there at all times and as intensely but I think it lead to a peculiar compression which some critics have not liked. I was initially put off, but now feel the summing up without so to speak a summing up lends the last two novels a d ...

515 Final Thoughts Today -- and a BATM Spoiler -- rank: 633
A warning: there is a BATM spoiler below ... Somewhat aimlessly and at loose ends this evening, I browsed through the books on my shelves and inevitably turned to the POB volumes. I read again in "Blue at the Mizzen" of Jack's nearly overwhelming joy when he learned of his promotion at last. And I read again that final paragraph in what shall now be the final volume: "After a last salute Jack glanced aloft - still the sweet west wind - and then he looked fore and aft: a f ...

518 BATM reviewed in Minneapolis paper today -- rank: 633
Lissuns, A coworker has just informed me that Blue is reviewed in the Minneapolis Star Tribune today. I found it at the following URL: http://www.startribune.com/stOnLine/cgi-bin/article?thisSlug=MIZ05 Registration is not necessary--at least I don't remember ever doing so. 519 POB tweaking time: not really a BATM spoiler -- rank: 633
The canon is full of time-tweaks. Children grow up at different rates; the year 1813 stretches as long as POB wants it to. There's an odd one in BATM, when the captain of the American frigate Delaware says, of his mother: "We celebrated her eighty-fifth birthday just before sailing." "Eighty-five; that is a great age," said Jack, and instantly regretting it...(etc) Why was Jack regretful? I think POB is giving us a peek at his private private life. Remember how old h ...

520 BATM Print Sighted -- rank: 633
While browsing through the Mystic Seaport Museum Store today, under the guise of last-minute Christmas shopping, I discovered they have an advanced copy of Geoff Hunt's new BATM print on display. It is printed a bit lighter than the picture on the Norton edition cover and with better contrast than the Harper-Collins cover; thus, it is a little easier to see some of the ship details (and if I had had a magnifying glass with me, maybe I could have even figured out what is visible through th ...

There will be several rather indistinct individuals scattered about the decks of the foreground ship, some in action, others with their hands clasped behind their backs and their hats worn athwartships, in the manner of Nelson. But that's all I can add for now. E. Only the rather shocking fact that Tom Pullings is in command of the opposing vessel. >Rumors have it the painting will contain the Penguin scene and an un-named >ship to ship fighting scene, complete with guns firing and spars toppled. > >My interest is the nationality of Jack's opponent. Apparently Geoff Hunt's cover of this newest O'Brian work - The Jet Black Shore - will be displayed here in San Francisco sometime in early 2000. (Actually in Marin, but that's close enough.) Rumors have it the painting will contain the Penguin scene and an un-named ship to ship fighting scene, complete with guns firing and spars toppled. My interest is the nationality of Jack's opponent. Some observers have a SA country involved. Can anyone confirm these details? * * * * J B K * * * * ...

I have admittedly seen only a rough outline of JBS for purposes of film options (we prefer to skim merely the highlights here in movieland) but the most exciting moment for me is definitely the scene where Tom Pullings, now in command of a rogue ... well I don't want to spoil it for the rest of you. >>Peter Mackay wrote: >>I believe it is called The Jet Black Shore and has HMS Surprise putting down >>a series of native rebellions.
