The cutting out of the Diane is on the same level as his earlier writing. But it is a surprise boat operation (pun only realized after the fact), not a ship to ship combat that is the staple of so many other writers of naval fiction. More and more, POB's pen has told ...

That scene that Bruce mentioned impressed me as well, for a slightly different reason. It seemed so cinematic. In my mind's eye, I could see him walking into the square, the people moving anti-clockwise, the ordered ranks of troops moving through the square, sweeping all away, and in the resulting silence, the solitary officer moving through the debris. With a sweeping camera move, it could be a stunner. Bill Peschel

adding to the insight: at intermission time, the Berlin Staatsoperhaus audience moves to the Promenade floor and swirls in a great anticlockwise elliptical mass. I recovered from my suprise to realize suddenly that may be why it got that name. Is this done elsewhere? Dancing anti-clockwise ("widdershins") around a bonfire was an activity attributed to witches. It's also the direction you are supposed to circumnavigate a church, but this is probably not what POB was thinking. Of course, the trip upriver in "Apocalypse Now" originated as the trip upriver in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Larry > ...

540 Minor BATM SPOILER -- rank: 633
BATM SPOILER of a minor sort BELOW I am not entirely clear in my own mind why this should be, but I find the passage in BATM dealing with Jack's walk down into town after dinner with Lord Barmouth more than a little unsettling. There is something to it which reminds me of -- to use a cinematic reference -- the trip upriver in "Apocalypse Now".
