542 NY Times Review of BATM -- rank: 633
The NY Times review of "Blue at the Mizzen" can be found on-line at http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/12/05/reviews/991205.05foremat.html You may have to register as a user of the NY Times to access it, but there is no cost (and the NY Times is a great resource anyway). The review of BATM by Amanda Foreman is highly favorable. She says the book is "a shining jewel .. an intricate, multifaceted work -- one of those rare novels that actually bear up under close scrutiny." ...

Interesting - yet one of the things most constant about Stephen is his inconsistent description of his own nature. He continously refers to his short stature, pale and forbidding visage and lack of any qualities attractive to women, women find him most agreeable. When he had no money, he was careless with what came his way, yet when his uncle died, he suddenly becomes concerned with the cost of passage by one means or another to London. While it is true that he described tea early on ...

Louis raises an interesting point, but perhaps stiff-upper-lippishness developed during mid-Victorian times. In *Persuasion*, which is Miss Austen's most mature novel, the men, and particularly the Naval men, are very open and not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. 549 [lissun-bag] Another oddity in BATM -- rank: 633
Himself writes that Stephen never liked the way that the English display their emotions; he is uncomfortable when he sees Jack homesick and depressed by a letter from home. Is this meant ironically? Aren't the English said not to show emotions, stiff upper lip and all that? The idea of an Englishman making more of a display of his emotions than an Irish Latin seems very odd. 550 [lissun-bag] Slight Changes in BATM -- rank: 633
A couple of little things struck me as unusual in BATM: - In an earlier book, when Stephen inherits from his godfather, he is described as one of the richest men in Europe. In BATM, his wealth seems insignificant compared to what his naturalist friend inherits. - Stephen is described as drinking tea regularly with Poll Skeeping et al. I thought he hated tea.
